SHILLONG, MAR 10: The Jaintia Students’ Union on Tuesday demanded immediate eviction of alleged illegal settlers in Lakroh, deletion of non‑citizens from voters’ lists, and urgent Inner Line Permit enforcement after four local residents were assaulted in Hawai Sutnga.
In a statement, JSU Education Secretary Bocheru Mi Pohsnem said a joint fact‑finding team between the central body and its Syndai Unit visited Lakroh on March 9 found a staggering 95% of the village occupied by non‑tribals holding temporary stay certificates that had been converted into permanent structures.
“Our tolerance has been weaponised… We refuse to become refugees in our own state,” he said.
“If the government… fails to protect our land, we will launch massive, state‑wide democratic agitation,” Pohsnem warned.
The union listed seven demands that include immediate arrests of all attackers, invalidation of NOCs and eviction drives in Lakroh, deletion of illegal EPIC/Aadhaar holders from rolls, sealing of an illegal Mandir defying a 2024 Dalloi/SDO stop order, cancellation of fraudulently issued PMAY houses and job cards; aggressive MRSSA checks and ILP implementation; and completion of border fencing stalled since 2025.
Investigating officer SI Rymbai of Muktapur outpost has informed the delegation that 4-5 key suspects have been identified and they are hunting the rest.
“While we note this progress, identifying them is not enough. We demand the police arrest every single coward involved in this attack immediately and ensure they face the harshest legal prosecution. The state must guarantee the safety of our locals. We will not rest until justice is served,” Pohsnem said.
He said in 2024, the JSU Syndai unit has taken up the issue of alleged unauthorized construction of a mandir in Lakroh.
“The dalloi and the SDO of Amlarem gave clear, official orders to stop all construction. Yet, whenw e inspected the site on March 9, the building was completed. This is a blatant, arrogant mockery of our local administration and customary laws. We demand the SDO to immediately step in, seal this illegaly completed structure, and take strict action against those who openly defied the law.”
“We further demand an immediate high-level inquiry and cancel every single fraudulently issued job card instantly and revoke PMAY housing allotments given to non-citizens,”he added.
Slamming the government’s failure to protect border villages, the JSU said, “We deand the aggressive enforcement of the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA) to flush oout suspected foreigners and we remind the government that implementing the ILP is no longer just a demand, it is an absolute necessity for our survival.”
It further stated that the central and state government should wake up from their deep slumber by taking steps to complete the border fencing along the Indo-Bangla border at the earliest.
