Man jumps into river after clash with drug users in Ri Bhoi; body recovered after three days

Nongpoh, Aug 14: The body of a 27-year-old man, identified as Wanphrangsngi Syiemlieh of Nongkyndang Saiden village, was recovered on Thursday from the Umtrew River, three days after he reportedly jumped from the Byrnihat bridge.

The body was found downstream near Morodola village, where it was first spotted by a local resident along the riverbank. Police officers from the Byrnihat Police Outpost retrieved the body and transported it to Civil Hospital Nongpoh for necessary formalities before handing it over to the family.

According to police reports, the incident took place on the morning of August 12 following a heated argument between drug users over ₹300. The dispute allegedly arose from the sale of a stolen mobile phone and escalated into a physical confrontation. Syiemlieh is believed to have fled the scene and leapt from the bridge into the river in an attempt to escape.

Authorities have registered a case and completed all legal procedures.
