SHILLONG, APR 10: The Assembly’s Estimates Committee has directed the Social Welfare Department to secure funds from both state and central governments to establish Anganwadi centres in over 1600 villages in Meghalaya that currently lack these facilities.

After chairing a review meeting on Friday, chairman of the committee Mayralborn Syiem stated, “We are concerned about the uncovered villages which do not have Anganwadi centres. There are more than 1600 villages which do not have Anganwadi centres. We have taken note of this and advised the Social Welfare Department to find ways and means to get funds from the central and state governments.”

The committee also emphasized addressing issues of early marriage and teenage pregnancy.

Syiem highlighted the importance of sensitizing citizens, particularly youth, through initiatives like Mission 1000.

“We need to sensitize our young boys and girls to get rid of various issues, especially teenage pregnancy. We must involve religious heads, traditional heads, women organizations, NGOs, and civil society to make people understand the role of the Social Welfare Department.”

Syiem stressed the need for collective efforts to tackle social issues, saying, “As a legislator, I feel it is my duty to ensure at any public gathering to sensitize people that we have to say no to drugs, no to early marriage, teenage pregnancy, no to tobacco, and all these issues which are there in the society. We have to collectively work together to ensure that it will benefit everyone.”

On the recent police crackdown on prostitution in Shillong, Syiem said, “Generally, we have discussed about the social causes, especially with the present generation, and all concerned departments have to work coherently, they have to converge to ensure the safety and security and the goodwill has to prevail in the society.”

The committee also reviewed five other departments, including education, PWD, PHE, Information Technology, and home police.

“The general observation to the department is that the committee is here not to point out fingers at anyone, not to blame but to ensure whatever provisions that have been made in the floor of the house through preceding budgets that have been passed, it has to reach to the last mile to the public at large,” Syiem noted.
