Shillong, Apr 10: A special court in East Khasi Hills has convicted two individuals and sentenced them to 14 years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually assaulting a child seven-and-half years back.
According to a press statement issued by the Superintendent of East Khasi Hills, Vivek Syiem, the case dates back to September 30, 2018, when an FIR was lodged at Madanrting Police Station alleging repeated sexual assault on a minor. Following the complaint, police registered a case under relevant provisions of the POCSO Act and the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and arrested the accused, Kamkhohthang Simte and Thangngin Sime.

After completion of the investigation, a chargesheet was filed in February 2019. The trial culminated on April 8, 2026, when the court of Special Judge (POCSO), R. Rymbai, delivered the judgment. Both accused were found guilty and sentenced to 14 years of imprisonment under the POCSO Act. The court also imposed a fine, with an additional six months’ imprisonment in case of default.
In addition, one of the convicts, Kamkhohthang Simte, was awarded a further two-year sentence under Section 506 of the IPC for criminal intimidation, along with an additional three months’ imprisonment in default of fine.
The investigation in the case was carried out by WPSI P. Wahlang of East Khasi Hills Police.
