Shillong, Jun 30: The Committee on Petitions of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly held an awareness programme at Batabari C&RD Block in Rajabala on Tuesday, assuring residents that grievances raised during the session—including complaints against MeECL and poor road connectivity—would be examined and forwarded to the government.
The programme was chaired by Committee Chairman and MLA Pongseng R Marak. Committee members Sanjay Sangma, Charles Marngar, Brightstarwell Marbaniang, Remington Gabil Momin, and Dr. Mizanur Rahman Kazi attended, along with Assembly officials, VEC functionaries, NGO representatives, Nokmas, students, and local residents.
“The awareness programme was organised to educate citizens about the functioning of the Committee on Petitions and its role in addressing public concerns,” Marak said.
He added that the interaction gave residents a chance to place several issues before the panel.
“The major concerns raised by the public related to the functioning of the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited and road connectivity in the area,” he said.
Committee member Dr. Mizanur Rahman Kazi stressed the importance of student participation.
He called students “the pillars of society and future agents of positive change.”
Explaining the Committee’s mandate, Dr. Kazi said it serves as “a bridge between citizens and the government by examining petitions and representations concerning public grievances.”
He added, “The Committee provides an avenue for citizens to seek redress when their concerns remain unresolved through other channels.”
During the session, residents flagged alleged overbilling and erratic electricity supply by SAI Computers, the power distribution firm operating in the area. They also raised concerns over the dilapidated condition of National Highway-127B connecting Phulbari, Rajabala and Selsella.
Dr. Kazi assured the gathering that all grievances would be reviewed.
“The Committee would carefully examine all grievances placed before it and take appropriate decisions in the best interest of the people before conveying its recommendations to the Government,” he said.
Remington Gabil Momin also addressed the gathering.
After the programme, members of the Committee on Petitions interacted with the public, heard their grievances and assured follow-up action.
