Shillong, Jun 30: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday said the upcoming Shillong Lok Sabha by-election is “crucial” and urged voters to look “beyond just party,” as he projected NPP candidate Dr DRL Nonglait as the right person to take up Meghalaya’s issues in Parliament. Sangma said the party is leaving nothing to chance in the bypoll.
“For every election, I have been very clear to the press and to the public — for us, every election is important. We never take an election for granted. We have to work hard. Every election is tough. We are not overconfident, nor are we underconfident, nor are we relaxed,” he told reporters. “We are working very hard on it. But we are very happy that we are able to present a very good candidate,” he added.
Highlighting Dr Nonglait’s credentials, the Chief Minister said, “We have seen that Dr Nonglait, apart from being one of the most qualified persons among the Khasis, is also a person who is deeply involved in society.
He is deeply involved in the development process of the state. He is deeply involved in the activities of the Church.”
“And more importantly, he is very genuine in working to make things better for our people and for our state,” Sangma said.
He said Dr Nonglait’s presence in the Lok Sabha would be a matter of pride for the state. “I can only say that it will be a proud moment for the people of our state to see a person like Dr Nonglait raise his voice and raise the concerns of the people of Meghalaya on the floor of the House,” Sangma said.

Sangma described him as someone with the ability to engage the Centre effectively.
“A man who can convince the Government of India with facts, a person who can speak with authority, a person who has in-depth knowledge of almost every subject, a person who will be able to confidently go to any Minister, even to the Prime Minister, and present the case and different issues of Meghalaya,” he said.
Framing the by-election as more than a political contest, Sangma said, “I think that is really what this election is all about, and I strongly feel that Dr Nonglait is the right person. I know that elections are there, different political parties are there, but I think in this election we have to look beyond just party.”
“This election is beyond just basic politics. This election is really about Khasi Hills, Jaintia Hills, and the people of this area, and to be able to send a representative who can really take up the issues of our region and of the state as a whole,” he added.
“That is why this election is important, crucial, and I think we are very lucky that a person like Dr Nonglait, of his capacity, is today our candidate,” the Chief Minister said.
“We are working very hard, not taking things easy. We will work hard and we will ensure that we do whatever we can to make Dr Nonglait successful in this coming election,” he added.
