Meghalaya Assembly turns blue, renews commitment on child rights

Must read

Shillong, Nov 20: The Meghalaya Legislative Assembly lit up in blue on November 19 and 20, placing the state firmly on the global map of World Children’s Day observances and signalling a renewed commitment to child rights. The Meghalaya High Court also illuminated its façade, underscoring a united institutional front to protect and promote the rights, safety, and dignity of every child.

Assembly Speaker Thomas A. Sangma said the symbolic gesture reflects the Legislature’s responsibility to ensure that child welfare remains central to policymaking. “Our institutions must stand as guardians of every child’s right to safety, education and a life of dignity,” he noted.

World Children’s Day — observed annually on November 20 to mark the adoption of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child — is part of UNICEF’s global “Go Blue” campaign, which sees monuments across India and the world illuminated in blue to show solidarity with children.

This year’s theme, “My Day. My Rights.”, urges communities to see child rights in everyday moments: a young girl walking to school in a remote village, a child accessing healthcare, or an adolescent seeking mental and emotional support. It calls for child rights to be embedded in daily life — from classrooms and healthcare centres to families and digital spaces.

Andrew Simons, Commissioner and Secretary of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, said the illumination reflects Meghalaya’s commitment to strengthening systems that safeguard children. “In solidarity with what is being observed globally, we are illuminating the Assembly building in blue to promote the rights, welfare, and development of children,” he said.

UNICEF Assam and Northeast Chief of Field Office, Dr. Madhulika Jonathan, lauded the initiative, calling it a “timely reminder that children must remain at the forefront of policy and public action.” She added, “Lighting up the Assembly and the High Court in blue reflects Meghalaya’s resolve to build a safe, inclusive, and nurturing environment for every child.”

UNICEF continues to partner with the Government of Meghalaya and the National Health Mission to strengthen maternal and newborn healthcare, expand routine immunization, and support frontline workers like ASHAs, ANMs, and Anganwadi workers — ensuring that even children in remote and hard-to-reach areas receive essential services and life-saving information.
