Shillong, May 1: In a significant step toward strengthening the state’s education system, the Meghalaya Cabinet on Thursday approved a major expansion and upgradation of higher secondary education infrastructure. The move targets two key challenges—shortage of seats and the uneven distribution of academic streams across government schools.
Cabinet Minister Paul Lyngdoh, briefing the media after the meeting, emphasized the pressing need for reform. “There is a need to upgrade the quality of education in our state. There is a deficit in intake capacity which stands at 12,000 seats, and there is also a disproportionate concentration of higher secondary schools, mostly in urban areas,” he said.
To address these gaps, six government secondary schools will be upgraded to the higher secondary level. These include:
Rymbai Secondary School, East Jaintia Hills
Umthlong Nongkhliew (to offer both Arts and Science streams)
Nongtalang Secondary School
Tirot Sing Memorial Secondary School
Tura Public School
Jowai Public School
This upgrade is expected to create nearly 9,000 additional seats, easing the existing shortfall significantly.
In addition, the Cabinet approved the introduction of new academic streams in several existing higher secondary schools to ensure a more balanced curriculum.
Science stream to be introduced at:
Tirot Sing Memorial Higher Secondary School, Nongkhlaw
Commerce stream to be introduced at:
Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Tura
Dalu Secondary School, West Garo Hills
Baghmara Higher Secondary School
Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Jowai
Sokha Higher Secondary School
“These schools have Arts and Science streams and will now get the benefit of Commerce as a stream,” Lyngdoh noted.
Arts stream to be introduced at:
Jirang Higher Secondary School
Resubelpara Higher Secondary School
Maharam Higher Secondary School, Mawkyrawat
Both Science and Commerce streams to be introduced at:
United Kharkutta Higher Secondary School, North Garo Hills
Malangkona Higher Secondary School
Altogether, six secondary schools will be upgraded, and 11 existing higher secondary schools will be enhanced with new academic streams.
The annual financial outlay for this educational expansion is estimated at around Rs 10 crore. The government expects this investment to significantly improve access to quality education, particularly in rural and underserved areas.
