Shillong, Sept 28: Meghalaya Football icon Eugeneson Lyngdoh has been approached by the people of Mawphlang to contest from the constituency for the by-election and succeed his father, late Syntar Klas Sunn. The Mawphlang Assembly seat fell vacant earlier this month after the demise of Sunn, who succumbed to COVID infection on September 10, 2021.
The supporters of SK Sunn visited the family’s home in large numbers on Monday to propose Lyngdoh’s name as the successor of his late father.Eugeneson Lyngdoh has played for Rangdajied United, Shillong Lajong FC and Benguluru FC in the I-League. Eugeneson then later went on to play for Pune FC and SC East Bengal in the Indian Super league. As a Midfielder, Lyngdoh has scored a tremendous amount of goals and bagged plenty of assists under his name.
He has also represented India as part of the Indian football team at international level on 24 occasions.
The midfielder’s dream of making a comeback to top tier Indian football appear to have ended last year when he was dropped by his Indian Super League club East Bengal after just two appearances. It was suggested that he had come to terms with the possible end of his football career and was intent on coaching Rangdajied United, the football team his father owned and for whom he had played for in 2013-14. Howevrr, with the sudden demise of Sunn on September 10, 2021 it may have upended those plans.
Meanwhile, Eugeneson and his family remain undecided on the proposal. He was quoted as saying, “It is something which is difficult to decide. Therefore, as a family, we have to come together and decide on it, so that, with one voice, we can unite.”
