Shillong, May 31: Minister for Food and Civil Supplies Comingone Ymbon on Friday said the government has implemented the open market scheme to stabilise the price rise of essential commodities for the past two-three months.
Speaking to reporters, Ymbon said due to this, the price of essential commodities has come down in the market except for vegetables due to the rainy season.
Asked, the minister said, “The government of India has a buffer stock and it is giving to all states through the open market scheme where the price (of rice) is only at Rs 22.50 per kg. Accordingly, we are now distributing it through the wholesalers of the state. They can sell it in the market also there is no bar.”

On exorbitant transportation cost, Ymbon said that the government is planning to construct a new bridge near the Umiam dam to address this issue. “They have started the work and I think in another 6-7 months they will complete the bridge,” he added.
Further, the minister said that the price monitoring system and vigilance team are in place to check price rise of essential commodities in the state.
Meanwhile, Ymbon said that the state has sufficient supply of food stock and is prepared in case of any situation arising out of the new variant of the Covid-19.
