Manikganj, June 26: The rabha community in the state, an economically deprived tribe for decades, could soon get a helping hand from the state with Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma announcing on Sunday that his government will consider special assistance to uplift the economic status of the community.

The chief minister made this announcement while addressing the 8th Biennial Conference of the All Rabha Students Union of Meghalaya cum 4th Baiko Dera Festival at Manikganj village in North Garo Hills, where he lauded the effort of the organisation in hosting the festival that promotes the identity of the Rabhas.

Making a comparison on preservation of heritage and moving with the changing times, the chief minister cautioned that culture and heritage of the people are the historical dna of the community which should never be lost even with the advent of technology that transforms the society.
“The advent of technology which has transformed society is important, but equally important is that one knows their root and ensures to safeguard the interest of the community,” said the chief minister.

Chief minister Conrad K Sangma has proudly hailed the upcoming elections to the post of President of India for which the country will be electing its first tribal President in the NDA candidature of Droupadi Murmu.

“This is a proud moment for every indigenous tribal people of the country,” said the chief minister and recalled his late father P A Sangma who despite not having the numbers in the electorate collage went ahead with the first ever attempt by a tribal to fight for this highest post in the country.
“Though he did not win the election yet he demonstrated a strong message that tribals can also occupy the highest position in the country,” reminded the chief minister.
Dy Speaker of Meghalaya Assembly Timothy D Shira, MLAs Marton Sangma and Rupert Momin attended the programme and spoke on the importance of unity and brotherhood amongst different tribes of the State.
Several cultural programmes are being held during the three day festival that promote the cultural heritage of the Rabhas.
