JOWAI, JUL 5: After the success of the Football Fan Park in Shillong, the Meghalaya government is now planning to set up similar viewing zones in Jowai and Tura for fans to watch the FIFA World Cup 2026 matches live.
State Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Wailadmiki Shylla announced this on Saturday while speaking to the media during his visit to inspect renovation work at the Aitnar of Seiñraij Ialong in West Jaiñtia Hills.
The government had earlier set up a Fan Park at the SRGT Parking Lot in Polo, Shillong, with a large LED screen to broadcast World Cup matches live and free of cost for the public.
“Seeing the enthusiasm of people who came to watch and support their teams at Polo, and knowing that the people of Meghalaya are very passionate about football, the Chief Minister has directed us to replicate this in other parts of the state,” Shylla said.
He said the Sports Department has decided to create two more Football Fan Parks, one each in Jowai and Tura.
“As the Round of 16 is about to begin, these fan parks will give football lovers a common place to gather and enjoy the matches together. It will make the experience even more exciting,” the minister added.
On the Jowai fan park, Shylla said the department is currently looking for a suitable location.
“We want it to be in a central area that is easily accessible to everyone. Once we finalise the site, we will inform the public,” he said.
The Shillong Fan Park at Polo had drawn large crowds during the group stages, with fans turning up in large numbers to watch matches on the big screen.
