Shillong, July 28: The Meghalaya High Court has disposed of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) concerning the relocation of licensed vendors to designated vending areas at Khyndailad area.
This was after the court was informed that the government had successfully relocated the vendors by the stipulated date of July 22.
“Since that goal has been achieved, nothing remains in this application,” the division bench comprising Chief Justice IP Mukerji and Justice W Diengdoh said in its order passed on Monday while disposing of MC(PIL) No. 2 of 2025.
“The subject-matter of this application was for modification of our earlier order granting limited time to licensed vendors to vend from police bazar. It was said that this restricted timing was affecting their business. In those circumstances, we enlarged the time permitting them to vend in the said area,” it stated.
The petitioner’s counsel raised concerns about the wrongful revocation of licenses for some vendors, which prevented their relocation.
The court decided to consider additional issues, including relocation of vendors from other crowded areas and eviction of unlicensed vendors, in the main PIL on August 5, 2025.
“Some additional issues like the one raised by Yobin noted above and the question of relocation of licensed vendors from other crowded public places to designated vending areas and eviction of unlicensed and unauthorised vendors from those places and all other related or ancillary issues shall be considered when we take up the main public interest litigation for further consideration on 5th August, 2025,” it stated in the order.
