NSCN/GPRN says Assam uses evictions as cover to occupy Naga land

Must read

Kohima, July 28: The NSCN/GPRN (Niki) has alleged that the recent evictions carried out by the Assam government are part of a deliberate strategy to seize Naga ancestral lands, branding them with the “misleading” label of Disturbed Area Belt.

In a statement, the group said the evictions were “neither a surprise nor unexpected” but a carefully orchestrated effort rooted in colonial-era boundaries imposed by the British without consultation with the Naga people.

The outfit further accused successive Assam governments of settling illegal Bangladeshi immigrants (IBIs) in disputed border areas as a covert means of territorial expansion.

The remarks come as the Assam government prepares to launch its first eviction drive in Upper Assam’s Uriamghat on Tuesday.

According to the NSCN/GPRN (Niki), Assam has breached status quo agreements by permanently deploying police in the Disturbed Area Belt under the guise of eviction operations. The group warned that the move reflects a broader pattern of Assam’s border disputes with multiple neighbouring states, raising concerns over escalating regional tensions.

It also urged the Naga public to question the Nagaland government’s border management strategy, accusing state politicians of showing up in conflict zones only during flare-ups and then abandoning them afterwards.

The group further flagged the trend of police and home guards lobbying for urban postings, calling it a serious threat to the security of border areas.
