SHILLONG, APR 23 : The Meghalaya High Court on Wednesday noted that environment clearance for the expansion of Shillong Airport has been received and the work order for runway extension, terminal building and apron expansion has been awarded, with 18 months allowed for completion.
While hearing a PIL, the division bench of Chief Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Justice W. Diengdoh also took on record a fresh status report tendered by Dr N Mozika, DSGI on behalf of the Airports Authority of India.
The Court noted key developments from the report.
“From the said report it appears that Environment Clearance has been received from the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change on 28th March, 2026 for the proposed project i.e., expansion of the runway of the Shillong Airport,” it said.
The work has been awarded to a private contractor.
“Work order for expansion of the Shillong Airport, including runway extension, expansion of Terminal Building and Apron and other allied works has been awarded to M/s KCC Buildcon Pvt. Ltd. on 1st April, 2026,” the order stated.
On the timeline, the bench said, “From the work order in particular, Clause 6 it appears that the time allowed for carrying out the construction work will be 18 months (including 3 months considered for rains) and that the same shall be reckoned from the 10th day after issuance of the said letter.” The report also detailed safety assessments.
“A stakeholders’ meeting was held on 8th April, 2026 for evaluation of safety assessment for the execution stage and that safety documents were prepared and have been sent to AAI, CHQ for vetting before submission to DGCA,” the order noted.
Advocate General A Kumar informed the Court about land transfer for the project.
“Mr A. Kumar, learned Advocate General states that the State will hand over the land to the Defence authorities at the earliest, in lieu of the land handed over by the Defence authorities to the State, for expansion of the runway, if not already done. Statement accepted,” the Court recorded.
“Fresh status report to be submitted on the next date,” the bench directed, listing the matter for June 17, 2026.
