Shillong, July 5: Meghalaya’s growing footprint in Indian kickboxing came into focus as the Meghalaya State Kickboxing Association (MSKA), in association with Team Revolution MMA Gym, celebrated National Kickboxing Day, commemorating the recognition of the WAKO India Kickboxing Federation as the National Sports Federation by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports on July 2, 2021.
The programme celebrated the achievements of kickboxers from the state while highlighting the sport’s rapid growth in Meghalaya over the past few years.

Speaking at the event, MSKA Working President Lorenzo P. Warjri said the recognition of WAKO India had opened new opportunities for Indian kickboxers to compete on genuine national and international platforms. He noted that kickboxing, now recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), has grown into one of the world’s fastest-expanding combat sports with participation from over 130 countries.
Warjri said Meghalaya has emerged as one of the country’s promising kickboxing hubs. Since its inception in 2017, the Meghalaya State Kickboxing Association has won 321 medals — including 104 gold, 102 silver and 115 bronze — besides securing 67 international medals and nine medals at the NEHU All India Inter-University Games since 2019.
A highlight of the celebration was the felicitation of Daniella I. Wanda Mylliemngap of Team Revolution MMA Gym, who won a bronze medal at the Asian Kickboxing Championship 2024 in Cambodia and later represented India at the WAKO World Kickboxing Championship 2025 in Abu Dhabi.

The event also recognised the contribution of martial artist and Team Revolution MMA Gym promoter Sambormi Lyngdoh, who has played a key role in training young athletes and promoting kickboxing in Meghalaya. Speakers described the academy as an important platform for nurturing sporting talent and positively engaging the state’s youth.
The association also announced that preparations are underway for the Senior and Masters National Kickboxing Championship, scheduled to be held in Ahmedabad from August 1 to 5, where nearly 50 kickboxers from districts across Meghalaya will represent the state.
Officials said the celebration was not only a tribute to the sport’s recognition in India but also an opportunity to inspire more young people to take up kickboxing and pursue excellence at national and international levels.
