‘Operation Honeymoon’: A brutal murder 2,227 km away

Must read

Shillong, June 10: A honeymoon typically symbolises love, hope, and new beginnings. But here, it’s the ominous backdrop for a cold-blooded murder plot. The operation name ‘Operation Honeymoon’ by Meghalaya Police captures the contrast—romance turned fatal—and conveys the emotional shock of betrayal. A brutal murder plot that was executed 2,227 km from the couple’s home in Indore.

Sources have informed that Meghalaya Police have named the operation to catch people involved in murder of Indore based businessman Raja Raghuvanshi in Sohra (Cherrapunji) as ‘Operation Honeymoon’, as he was allegedly killed by his newlywed wife Sonam Raghuvanshi after elaborate planning alongwith her paramour Raj Kushwaha.

Police often assign code names to complex cases. Choosing “Honeymoon” neatly ties the investigation to the timing of the crime (the couple was on their honeymoon in Meghalaya). The central figure (the bride, Sonam, is now accused of orchestrating the murder). This provides both operational clarity for investigators and resonance in public communications.

It all started after Sonam and Raja Raghuvanshi, who had got married on May 11, came for their honeymoon to Meghalaya. The couple reached Shillong on May 21, went to Sohra on May 22 on a rented scooty, but on May 23, the couple went missing, prompting a manhunt by local authorities. Days later, on June 2, Raja’s body was recovered in a deep gorge near Weisawdong Falls within Sohra area in the East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya.

Sohra is odd 2,227 km away from Indore by road.

Police investigations revealed that Raja was killed on May 23 reportedly by three accomplices. A murder weapon (Dao) and broken mobile phone pieces were recovered. Sonam was caught on CCTV with the accused post-crime. All main suspects, including Sonam, have been arrested.

A “stained” raincoat is found at Mawkma, allegedly belonging to Sonam. On June 8-9, four individuals were arrested in connection with the case, from different parts of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. Two are arrested from Indore, one from another part of Madhya Pradesh and one person from Lalitpur in Uttar Pradesh.

On June 9, Sonam surrendered at Nandganj Police Station in Ghazipur district in Uttar Pradesh.

On the evening of June 9, a Meghalaya Police team reached Ghazipur and took custody of Sonam. She was produced at the local court and was remanded to 3 days of transit remand to Meghalaya Police.

Police sources say Sonam will reach Shillong at midnight on Tuesday and will be produced in a local court in Shillong on Wednesday.
