Shillong, Nov 2: CID sleuths on Wednesday arrested the Commandant of the SF-10 battalion GK Iangrai for his alleged involvement in the misappropriation of funds for construction of NERS PSAP facility at Sadar PS Complex.
Iangrai, who was former Assistant Inspector General of Police (Administration), was arrested from his residence following a raid.
Confirming the arrest, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong told reporters that the police officer has been arrested and that law will now take its own course.
“We have no option but to go for suspension (of the arrested police officer),” he said.
When asked, Tynsong however said, “Ultimately let the law proceed further till the final conclusion is arrived then we will see what is to be done.”
According to him, the police action is guided by the law.
On the demand for a CBI probe into the entire matter, the deputy chief minister however said, “You need to understand one thing since action has been taken by the concerned department (by arresting the police officer) and next the procedure is in place so let the law enforcing agency take care of everything. You see ultimately now because this issue has also come up in the high court where I think everything will be there black and white and transparency will also be there black and white.”
A case under Prevention of Corruption Act was registered against Iangrai by the Crime Investigation Department (CID) on October 28. This followed the constitution of a Special Investigating Team (SIT) headed by DIG (Eastern Range) Davis Marak.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) CID, Meghalaya O Pasi said a case was registered on October 28 based on the allegation of Misappropriation of funds by G.K. Iangrai, MPS in the construction of NERS PSAP facility at Sadar PS Complex.
“During the investigation of the same, on 02/11/2022, simultaneous searches were conducted on the strength of the warrant issued by the Hon’ble Court of the Special Judge (PC Act), Shillong at the residential premises of Shri G K Iangrai at Lumshyiap, Chanmari, Upper Golf Links, Shillong 1, Official Quarter at Golf Links, and Farm House at Rtiang, Umsning, Ribhoi,” Pasi said.
“During the searches, many incriminating documents, cash and material objects were seized and Shri G K Iangrai was arrested. Further investigation of the case continues,” he added.
In the past, a probe team headed by Inspector General (Law and Order) Mukesh Kumar Singh had found Iangrai’s alleged involvement in procurement of 29 vehicles when he was holding the post of Assistant Inspector-General of Police (Administration).
