SHILLONG, FEB 26: The Indian Institute of Public Health, Bill 2026 was tabled in the Assembly for consideration on Wednesday, marking a significant step towards establishing a public health sciences university in the state.
Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui laid the statements, objects, and reasons for the bill, stating that the Indian Institute of Public Health (IIPH) Shillong Society proposes to establish and incorporate a public health sciences university in Meghalaya. The university aims to provide high-quality research and education in diverse areas of public health sciences, promoting better health in the state, Northeast Region, and nation.
“The Indian Institute of Public Health (IIPH) Shillong Society, proposes to establish and incorporate a public health sciences university in the State, with emphasis on providing high quality research and education in the diverse areas of public health sciences for the promotion of better health in the State, Northeast Region and Nation,” Rymbui said.
The proposed university will focus on disciplines such as Public Health, Medicine, Allied Health, Nutrition, Behavioural Sciences, and support disciplines like Biotechnology, Information Technology, Health Management, and Health Economics.
It will also revitalize traditional health systems, knowledge, and practice, and train academicians, researchers, and practitioners, especially for rural and marginalized sections of society.
The IIPH Shillong was established by the Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) in collaboration with the Government of Meghalaya, and this bill is a significant step towards strengthening public health education and research in the region.
