SHILLONG, FEB 26: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma outlined an ambitious vision for Meghalaya’s future, highlighting key projects and initiatives that will drive growth and development in the state.
Replying to the budget discussion on Wednesday, Sangma said that over 1,700 acres of land have been secured for the New Shillong city development project, which is expected to create 1,09,500 employment opportunities by 2032.
The Chief Minister announced that Rs 4,573 crore worth of projects are currently under implementation, including the Shillong Technology Park phase II at Rs 120 crore and the Meghalaya Skills & Innovation Hub at Rs 102.5 crore.
Additionally, Rs 5,150 crore worth of projects are in the pipeline, including 1,000 affordable housing units, a 24m wide pedestrian-friendly road network, and upgraded water & power supply systems.
Sangma also highlighted the construction of the New Meghalaya Secretariat, which is being built at a cost of Rs 1,231 crore and is expected to be completed by 2027.
The Chief Minister announced that Meghalaya will become the football capital of India with the construction of the country’s first FIFA category 1 stadium, which will have a seating capacity of 40,000 and can host AFC competitions and World Cup qualifiers.
The stadium, inspired by a bamboo basket, will feature hybrid football turf that can host two international matches in one day.
Sangma also provided updates on the preparations for the National Games 2027, stating that there will be 39 sporting disciplines over 19 days, with over 12,000 participants and 8,000 local volunteers.
The event is expected to create over 30,000 indirect employment opportunities, and Rs 39.17 crore has been sanctioned to 26 sports associations for phase 1 team preparation.
