SHILLONG, FEB 27: Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Home (Police) Prestone Tynsong acknowledged concerns over road safety, saying the government is committed to reviving the Motor Vehicle Act-prescribed board to tackle accidents.

Replying to a cut motion, Tynsong said, “We have seen on the ground the concerns are there…almost every day unfortunate incidents happen in the state.”

He attributed accidents to multiple factors, emphasizing inter-departmental coordination.

“We will surely revive the functioning of this board… once reactivated, we’ll be able to cut down unfortunate incidents,” Tynsong said, aligning with suggestions of the members to reactivate the board.

On traffic issues, he said Shillong’s problems are chronic and spreading to district headquarters.

“We would like the police to strengthen or create more traffic branches… to regulate traffic and ease the suffering of pedestrians and public transport users.”

Tynsong stressed punishment over fines for reckless driving.

“I personally feel punishment should be a priority… we need to guide those reckless drivers to follow guidelines.”

He appealed for public cooperation, saying, “Drivers should take whole responsibility to ensure unfortunate incidents don’t happen.”
