Shillong, June 5: Growing concerns over changing climatic conditions and mounting plastic pollution took centre stage at a World Environment Day programme in West Jaintia Hills, where environmental experts urged young people to become catalysts for grassroots environmental action.

The workshop, organised by the Environmental Information, Awareness, Capacity Building and Livelihood Programme (EIACP) Hub under the State Council of Science, Technology and Environment (SCSTE), was held at Ummulong Presbyterian College and focused on raising awareness about local environmental challenges and sustainable practices.

Ummulong Presbyterian College Principal Klinsmann Lamare stressed that environmental awareness should extend beyond science and be integrated across disciplines, noting its relevance in literature, culture and everyday life.

Addressing students and faculty, Dr R. Eugene Lamare, Programme Officer of EIACP PC-Hub, warned that Meghalaya has witnessed noticeable changes in local climatic conditions in recent years and stressed that immediate action is needed to address environmental degradation.

He highlighted the growing threat posed by indiscriminate use of single-use plastics and improper waste disposal, calling on communities to strengthen grassroots initiatives aimed at protecting the environment.

“Our future depends on the actions we take today,” he said, urging participants to adopt environmentally responsible practices and contribute to local conservation efforts.

The programme also sought to promote a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness between humans and nature through awareness activities designed to encourage environmental stewardship among youth.

Environmentalist and resource person Dr H.H. Morhmen highlighted Meghalaya’s rich natural heritage and encouraged students to adopt simple but effective measures to help conserve the environment.

The programme concluded with the planting of cherry blossom saplings within the college campus as part of efforts to promote environmental awareness and ecological restoration.

Observed globally under the theme “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future”, World Environment Day 2026 focused on mobilising communities and institutions to take collective action against environmental degradation and climate change.
