Michael Kharsyntiew: Man with a mission

Must read

Shillong, May 27: Meghalaya has been on a war-footing in its efforts to tackle the novel corona virus in the state, with multitudes of people contributing to the fight in their own way. With lockdowns and several restrictions in place, and the state government machinery stretched to its limit in taking care of the rising cases of COVID-19, good Samaritans, and social organizations have come forward to lend the much-needed hand to double the efforts of the government as well as provide much reprieve to the people, especially those that have been left jobless and without money.

Joining the list of contributors to the efforts to contain the pandemic, social worker Michael Kharsyntiew is doing his bit by not only sanitizing locality after locality but also providing nutritious meals to the needy.

Abiding by the motto of working for the needy without thinking of any gains or profit, Kharsyntiew says he along with his team of 100 volunteers are doing this to help the people of the state keep safe.

His team has been sanitizing boundary walls, shops’ shutters, road railings, church premises, and places people buy essentials materials from with is Sodium Bactafree for three days to ensure that the virus doesn’t spread in the city.

They have sanitized 6 localities in three days, namely, Wahingdoh, Riatsamthiah, Wahthapbru, Mission, Mawkhar, and Umsohsun.

He says the work is a continuation of the work they have been doing since last year when the first wave of pandemic hit the State and this year too they have tried to continue their work.

“We hope that by doing these sanitization works in many localities, it will help to reduce the spread of this virus,” he says.

Additionally, his team is running dietary services from the premises of Dr. HG Robert Hospital and NEIGRIHMS whereby food and ration is distributed to the needy section of the society.

Assuring that he will try to sanitize as many localities as possible and as long as possible, he also appealed to people to follow COVID appropriate behaviour and advisory of the government to reduce the risk of contracting the virus.

He also thanked all the frontline workers and health workers who have been actively involved and sacrificing their life to save the people that are affected by the pandemic.

He is doing these voluntary programmes in association with KQM Trust, which is a London-based NGO, that has been doing a lot of commendable jobs for the state in the field of education and health.
