Tura, Jan 14: A 31 year old man has been taken into custody on Wednesday by West Garo Hills police for the alleged rape and assault of a 16 year old girl in a village under Selsella region.

The accused, Sengbit M Marak, was a neighbour of the minor girl and on Tuesday afternoon followed her when she went to the fields to bring back her family’s cows.

According to the victim’s family, the sexual predator came up from behind as she was trying to guide the cows back to the village.

She was unable to shout out for help as the criminal held his hand to her mouth and took her to the nearby forest where he committed the crime. He also assaulted her and threatened to murder her with the dao he was carrying if she informed anyone.

The victim was spotted by her elder sister crying inconsolable by the water tank and after much persuasion narrated her assault and abuse.

She told her family that the same man had attacked her in the month of Julym last year, also.

The family quickly rushed to the nearest police post and filed an FIR.

He was arrested soon after under the Protection of Children against Sexual Offenses (PoCSO) and taken into custody while the victim was sent for medical examination and treatment.
