Guwahati, Nov 10: The body of a missing college girl was recovered from the septic tank of a store owned by one Jagat Singh in Titabor, Jorhat district, on Monday.
The victim has been identified as Biplabi Das, a student of Nandanath Saikia College, Titabor.
According to police sources, Biplabi had been missing since November 7, when she was returning home from college. Her family had filed a missing person’s complaint at the Titabor Police Station soon after her disappearance.
Following sustained interrogation, police detained Jagat Singh (63), who later confessed to killing the girl and dumping her body in the septic tank behind his store. Based on his revelation, police recovered the decomposed body on Monday.
It is suspected that the girl was sexually assaulted before being murdered, though the exact motive behind the crime remains unclear. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination to ascertain the cause of death.
Local residents alleged that the police failed to act promptly after the missing complaint was lodged. “We filed the missing complaint at Titabor Police Station, but the police did not take it seriously or initiate a search immediately. Today, her body was found in a septic tank,” said one resident, expressing outrage over the incident.
Following the discovery, angry residents gheraoed the Titabor Police Station, demanding justice for the victim and stringent punishment for the accused.
“We demand capital punishment for Jagat Singh, or he should be shot in an encounter. We appeal to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to ensure the case is transferred to a fast-track court,” said one of the protesters.
Police have launched a detailed investigation into the case.
