Imphal, June 5: The disappearance of six Naga men in Manipur has now reached the High Court, with the state government directed to submit an Action Taken Report (ATR) by June 8 on efforts made to trace them and investigate the case.
The six men reportedly went missing after being abducted from Leilon Vaiphei village in Kangpokpi district on May 13. More than three weeks later, their whereabouts remain unknown, triggering growing concern among Naga civil society groups and community organisations.
The matter came before the High Court through a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking urgent intervention to locate the missing men and secure their safe release. During the hearing, questions were also raised over the status of the investigation after submissions before the court suggested that while the state government had indicated the case was being handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), the agency had not received any official communication on the matter.

The case has sparked widespread protests across Naga-dominated areas of Manipur. Student bodies and civil society organisations have organised marches and demonstrations demanding accountability and faster action from authorities. A solidarity march was recently held from Ukhrul to Makhan, with participants calling for justice for the missing men and expressing concern over their continued disappearance.
The issue has also reignited concerns over security in the hill districts of Manipur, where ethnic tensions continue to cast a shadow over daily life. Community organisations have warned that public anger is growing as families wait for answers. Several groups have sought stronger intervention from both the state and central governments to trace the missing men and bring those responsible to justice.
The disappearance comes against the backdrop of continuing instability in Manipur, where ethnic tensions and sporadic incidents of violence have repeatedly disrupted normal life since 2023. Security, movement of civilians and inter-community relations remain sensitive issues across several districts.
The High Court is expected to take up the matter again on June 8, when the state government will be required to place before it the steps taken so far to trace the six missing men and the progress made in the investigation.
