Guwahati, June 5: A family of four, including a 12-year-old boy, was burnt alive after a fire ripped through a rented residential compound in Guwahati’s Jalukbari area before dawn on Friday, trapping the victims inside as they slept.
The deceased have been identified as Kuddus Ali (65), Kajoli (40), Safiqul (30) and Sahid Ali (12). The family hailed from the Krishnai area of Goalpara district and was living in a rented accommodation at Jaymati Nagar.
According to local residents, the blaze broke out in the early hours of the morning and spread rapidly through the residential compound, engulfing at least two houses before many occupants could react.
By the time neighbours woke to the smell of smoke and the sight of flames leaping through the structure, the fire had already intensified.
“They were trapped inside. Everything happened very fast,” a resident said.
The residential compound, owned by Rehena Choudhary, housed around 10 tenant families across 11 rooms. Eight families were reportedly present on the premises when the fire broke out.
Police, firefighters and rescue personnel rushed to the scene after the incident was reported. Teams from the Fire and Emergency Services, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) joined the operation to douse the flames and carry out rescue and recovery efforts.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine how the blaze started and why it spread so quickly through the residential complex.
For residents of Jaymati Nagar, Friday began with scenes that few will forget, a family wiped out within minutes, their home reduced to charred debris before sunrise.
