Guwahati, June 18: The Mizoram government and the Digital India BHASHINI Division (DIBD) under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) today to drive digital services in the Mizo language and strengthen multilingual governance.
The MoU was formalised at the MeitY Office in the CGO Complex, New Delhi, in the presence of senior officials, including Khilli Ram Meena, Chief Secretary, Government of Mizoram; Shri Abhishek Singh, Additional Secretary, MeitY; Amit Sharma, Secretary, ICT and Cooperation, Government of Mizoram; and Amitabh Nag, CEO, Digital India BHASHINI Division.
With this agreement, Mizoram becomes the latest state to adopt BHASHINI’s cutting-edge language technology platform, reaffirming its commitment to preserving its linguistic heritage while ensuring inclusive access to digital governance and public services.
The strategic partnership aims to enable citizen services in Mizo and other local languages, improving access to government schemes and information, breaking language barriers in public administration, fostering transparency, trust, and greater citizen participation, and empowering communities digitally by making government services accessible regardless of language.
It will also enhance Mizo language AI models by developing richer datasets and culturally relevant tools for India’s multilingual digital landscape.
A key highlight of the rollout will be the upcoming BHASHINI Rajyam workshop in Aizawl, where government officials and stakeholders will collaborate on implementing the program, building local capacity, and deploying multilingual technologies across departments.
Speaking on the occasion, Khilli Ram Meena, Chief Secretary of Mizoram, said, “This partnership with BHASHINI will make digital governance truly accessible to every Mizo citizen. By preserving our language while embracing technology, we are building a more inclusive digital future for Mizoram.”
Abhishek Singh, Additional Secretary, MeitY, added, “With this MoU, BHASHINI is proud to support Mizoram in enabling multilingual governance and fostering innovation rooted in the state’s linguistic diversity.”
Highlighting the impact on tribal communities, Amit Sharma, Secretary, ICT and Cooperation, Government of Mizoram, stated, “BHASHINI’s multilingual technology will transform how we serve our citizens, especially those in tribal areas, by making digital services more inclusive and culturally sensitive.”
Amitabh Nag, CEO of Digital India BHASHINI Division, described the partnership as a co-creation, saying, “This is not just a technology deployment—it’s a movement to design governance that speaks the language of its people.”
