Shillong, May 29: The Meghalaya State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MSCPCR) has strongly condemned the incident involving a masked man harassing schoolgirls in the Umsohsun locality of Shillong. The disturbing act, that occurred last week, was caught on CCTV and has since sparked public outrage.
MSCPCR Chairperson Agatha K Sangma said the commission had immediately taken cognizance of the matter and was working closely with the District Child Protection Unit to trace the perpetrator.
“As soon as I became aware of the video, we reached out to the District Child Protection Unit. We are actively trying to locate the offender and ensure appropriate action is taken,” she stated.
The District Child Protection Unit plays a vital role in implementing child safety and welfare measures at the local level.
Calling the act “terrible and unacceptable,” Sangma added, “People like that must be punished—there are no two ways about it. This is a serious crime and must not go unpunished. As a commission, we strongly condemn this incident. We must ensure our children, especially girls, are safe in our communities.”
Visibly affected by the incident, she said, “She was just a young child on her way to school, and to experience something like this is simply unacceptable.”
The incident came to light after CCTV footage from a narrow lane in Umsohsun surfaced, showing a masked man approaching and harassing young girls returning from school. The video quickly spread across social media, drawing widespread condemnation and renewed calls for enhanced safety measures, including better surveillance in residential areas.
Police have registered a suo motu case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, and a full-scale investigation is currently underway.
