Shillong, June 11: As the investigation into the murder of newlywed Raja Raghuvanshi continues, the mother of one of the key accused, Raj Singh Kushwaha, has made an emotional plea, insisting that her 21-year-old son is innocent.
Raj was arrested along with three others for allegedly helping Sonam Raghuvanshi, Raja’s wife, plot the murder during their honeymoon in Meghalaya. The case has drawn attention both in Indore, where the couple lived, and in the Northeast, where the crime took place.
“Please prove my child innocent,” said Chunni Devi, Raj’s mother. “He worked hard after his father died. He looked after me and his three sisters. He worked late nights and never had any affairs. He is just 21. How can he do this?”
Raj worked at a plywood factory owned by Sonam’s father in Indore. His family claims he had no relationship with Sonam beyond work. But police say Raj and Sonam were in a relationship before her marriage to Raja. Investigators claim call records show frequent contact between the two. Sonam is 24.
According to Meghalaya Police, Sonam planned her husband’s murder and involved Raj and three others to carry it out.
Raja’s body was found in a gorge near Weisawdong Parking Lot on June 2, days after the couple went missing on May 23. What began as a missing person case soon turned into a murder investigation.
“If Sonam didn’t want to marry, she should have spared my son,” said Ashok Raghuvanshi, Raja’s father. “She wanted the jewellery. She should be hanged for what she has done.”
Raj’s sister has also defended him, saying, “My brother only worked for Sonam’s family. There was no relationship. He and Vishal (another accused) are innocent. All this is false.”
Five people have been arrested so far—Sonam, Raj, Vishal Singh Chauhan, Anand, and Akash. Police say Sonam was the mastermind. She surrendered on June 9 at Nandganj police station in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, after days of search by multiple police teams.
