NEHUTA to hold rally, stage dharna against ‘wrong-doings’ of NEHU VC today

Shillong, Oct 12: The North Eastern Hill University Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA) has decided to intensify its agitation by organizing a rally and dharna on Thursday against the alleged “wrong doings” of the incumbent vice chancellor of the University Prof PS Shukla.

A dossier highlighting the extent of violations allegedly done by Prof Shukla within a span of 2 years of being in office was also submitted to the President of India and Union Minister of Education for their necessary intervention.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, NEHUTA president Lakhon Kma said that NEHUTA is fighting this VC to save NEHU at any cost.

“We have decided to organize a Rally and Dharna against the VC. This is a clarion call and all of you are requested to join us without fail on 12/10/2023-Thursday at 3 pm in front of NEHU library for the Rally, from where we will proceed towards his office for the Dharna to mark our protest,” he said while urging the MCTA, NEHUSU, NEHUNSA to extend their support and cooperation.

“We are fighting against all his wrong doings and also to protect our legitimate right as members of the Academic Council which the VC has tried to trample. If we allow, it will set a dangerous precedent, emboldening the VC to violate all statutory provisions on different matters concerning our well-being as University fraternity,” Prof Kma added.

The president said that the general body meeting of NEHUTA on October 6 had deliberated on the requisition of the emergency meeting of the Academic Council, which was signed by 100 AC members from Shillong and Tura campuses submitted to the VC on October 4.

He said the association had requested the VC to notify the emergency AC latest by October 9, failing which they will intensify their agitational programmes but the VC had ignored it.

The demand was made in view of the hasty and inappropriate implementation of NEP 2020 at UG level in NEHU affiliated colleges without the approval of the AC.

“The Meghalaya College Teachers’ Association (MCTA), an apex body of teachers of affiliated colleges has been demanding to resolve the issue and hence have been boycotting all 1st Semester classes based on hasty and illegitimately implemented NEP for the past 2.5 months now but the VC is adamant and refused, putting the careers/degrees of thousands of students under questionable legitimacy,” Prof Kma said.

He informed that so far, all NEHUTA members have abstained from setting and moderating Question (Qs) Papers of 1st semester under illegitimately implemented NEP at UG level for different subjects. Moreover, the Academic Council is yet to decide on the model Question papers under NEP for UG, which is required as per NEHU Ordinance so that there is uniformity in the pattern of Question paper setting across all subjects.

In absence of model question papers, no teacher can set the questions and hence it cannot be moderated. Even the MCTA is not participating in the setting/moderation of question papers of 1st Semester under illegitimately implemented NEP.

“The unilateral and hasty decision of the VC is an act of infringement on the rights of the AC and violating the established norms and procedures as per NEHU Act, Statutes and Ordinances. He has failed to uphold the democratic norms and the sanctity of the Statutory Body of the University like the Academic Council,” he added.
