New Meghalaya Assembly building nears completion, target to host Budget Session 2022

Shillong, July 6: Meghalaya Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh on Tuesday informed that work on the new Assembly building at Mawdiangdiang is nearing completion with work left only on the main hall. With the current pace of work, he is hopeful that the next Assembly session could be held at the new Meghalaya Assembly building.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, he said a detailed review meeting on the progress of work held on July 2 shows that the construction work is continuing at a good pace with the civil work on the main building almost completed whereas work on the dome, which is the main part of the hall, yet to be completed.

“Glad to inform the progress of work inspite of lockdown, with shortage of manpower, even then work is still in a good pace,” he informed.

He said all attempts are being made to see that the work is completed by the end of this year so that 2022 budget session can be held in the new building.

Work on dome to be completed soon

On the dome part, he said all the fabricated structure is already ready in Kolkata and the dome part of this consignment will reach Shillong sometime by the end of July month, following which the installation of dome will take place.

Rest of the work concerns partition of rooms, such as Speaker’s room, the Chief Minister’s room, the Ministers rooms, the conference hall, canteen, allocation for the offices of the Assembly office and other rooms which are related to the Assembly. This part is also almost completed and currently the electrical wiring is going on.

Incomplete works

– Police department had inspected the site and discussed at length about the security system.

– MePDCL has identified the location for the installation of sub-stations, which will be at the main compound of the building, work for which will start soon.

– Water supply and plantation work will be done side by side.

– Road widening work from Demseiniong till Mawdiangdiang to ease traffic has been slowed down due to lockdown.

– Boundary fencing to be completed by the end of the year, tenders for which have been floated by the Assembly office. The allotment of work is expected to be given out within a day or two for work to begin immediately.

Expenses

Concerning the expenses, Lyngdoh said most of the part is under PWD building since most of the works has been taken up by them. Only few works which has not been included in the tender contract, which will come as additional items and few parts will be taken up by the Assembly office.
