Shillong, July 6: Despite years of complaints and reports to show the overburdening of Marten dumping ground to handle the waste of Shillong city and the air pollution in the adjacent areas, Meghalaya government is yet to finalize a new landfill site for the Shillong city.
Urban Affairs Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar on Tuesday informed that the process of identifying a new landfill site for Shillong is going on in full swing.
This comes when the work to identify a new landfill site has been going on for years.
Talking to reporters after meeting a delegation of Seng Samla (Youth organization) Mawlai Pyllun, he said around 5-6 applications have been received so far following advertisement published by the department during the tenure of the former minister.
He said a joint inspection was also conducted in 2-3 places for the new landfill site in Shillong. The minister however said he is still waiting for a report from the department.
Dhar also added that he would hold a meeting at the office of the Deputy Commissioner of West Jaintia Hills at Jowai on Wednesday to discuss new landfill site for Jowai town.
Mentionably, Marten as a landfill site has been in use since 1938 and there has been a long pending demand to shift it.
