Williamnagar, Feb. 12: Nirupama Memorial Secondary School, a prominent educational institution in Garobadha, South West Garo Hills, celebrated its Silver Jubilee with great enthusiasm at its Rangatari campus, commemorating 25 years of dedicated service to education.
Founded in 2001 by Subir M. Marak, then a Junior Engineer, the school was established with the vision of providing quality education to children in the region.
Marak resigned from his government post to pursue his mission in education and later entered politics. He is currently serving as the MLA of Rangsakhona Constituency.
The Silver Jubilee celebration was graced by Meghalaya Education Minister Lakhmen Rymbui as Chief Guest and Selsella MLA Arbinstone B. Marak as Guest of Honour. Among other dignitaries present were Anendya Raajsshre, Deputy Commissioner of South West Garo Hills; Vikash Varma, Superintendent of Police; Dr. Vasanthi Vijayakumar, Pro Vice-Chancellor of Captain Williamson Sangma State University; Ambrose Ch. Marak, Registrar of the same university; Proloy M. Sangma, Director of ICFAI University and Manseng R. Marak, Director of Administration, MBOSE. Alumni, former teachers, parents, and well-wishers also attended the function.
The programme began with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp by the Chief Guest and dignitaries, followed by an invocation prayer led by Rev. Walsing M. Marak of Garobadha Mondoli.
In his welcome address, the proprietor and local MLA of Rangsakhona Constituency, Subir M. Marak stated that the school was named in loving memory of his mother, Late Nirupama M. Marak.
He expressed gratitude to the guests and announced that the Silver Jubilee celebrations would continue through various academic, sports, and extracurricular competitions, culminating in February 2027.
The Chief Guest unveiled a foundation stone for new infrastructure and released the Silver Jubilee Souvenir Magazine, copies of which were distributed to the dignitaries.
A student narrated the history of the institution, highlighting its humble beginnings. Students presented a variety of cultural and entertainment performances, including songs, dances, fashion shows, fancy dress competitions, and musical recitals. Cultural dances representing the Garos, Hajongs, Koch, and Mizos reflected the school’s diverse student community. A musical performance by Kasachi Manasa and her group was among the highlights of the event.
Addressing the gathering, Education Minister Lakhmen Rymbui congratulated the school for completing 25 years of service in imparting knowledge.
He described Subir M. Marak as a visionary leader and encouraged more individuals to contribute to community development through education. He also stated that under the leadership of Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, the education sector in Meghalaya has seen significant progress, with several new schools and colleges established across the state.
Speaking to Hub News, Subir M. Marak credited the institution’s success to the dedication of former and present teachers, as well as the trust placed in the school by parents and students. He revealed plans to upgrade the institution by introducing Higher Secondary classes and establishing a Degree College by 2028.
Chingchang A. Sangma, a pastor and member of the school’s first batch, shared his happiness on the occasion. Recalling the modest beginnings of the school, he expressed pride in its growth and advised current students to remain disciplined and respectful to achieve success in life.
The Silver Jubilee celebration marked a significant milestone in the institution’s journey, reflecting its commitment to educational excellence and community development in South West Garo Hills.
