SHILLONG, SEP 24: Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Home (Police) Prestone Tynsong has directed the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to conduct a thorough probe into the incident that led to the recent tragic death of four-year-old Insaphira Lyngdoh Mawnai at Nongrah Nonglum.
According to him, there is need to uncover the circumstances surrounding Insaphira’s death and determining why the 13-year-old boy did not report the incident immediately.
“I have already instructed the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to further go deeper as to why that unfortunate incident happened and why that boy did not inform immediately about this incident. Why he kept quiet and pretended as if he doesn’t know anything,” Tynsong told reporters.
“So the team is still on to really get into the deeper facts where I personally feel, if they have any kind of hiding somewhere here and there,” he added.
On September 18, the 13-year-old boy, a neighbor and frequent visitor of the victim’s family, has been produced before the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) after he admitted to taking the girl to a nearby construction site, from where her body was found on September 15.
Insaphira Lyngdoh Mawnai was reportedly gone missing from her residence at 8am on September 14.
The police investigation, led by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by SP (City) Herbert Kharkongor, had revealed that the boy had taken the girl to the construction site, where he slipped and pulled the girl along, resulting in her accidental drowning.
The post-mortem report confirmed that the cause of death was drowning, with no evidence of physical injury or sexual assault.
During the SIT investigation, the boy confessed to taking the girl to the site and attempting to distract attention by concocting a story about a black Scorpio vehicle and masked men.
