Itanagar, Oct 28: Normal life came to a standstill in the Upper Subansiri district of Arunachal Pradesh on Monday following a 12-hour bandh called by the All Upper Subansiri District Students’ Union (AUSDSU). The bandh was held to demand the permanent withdrawal and cancellation of the 1,605 MW Subansiri Upper Hydro Project.
The bandh, which began at 5 am, completely paralysed daily activities as vehicles stayed off the roads and business establishments downed their shutters.
Speaking to reporters, AUSDSU president Tadak Chokar said the bandh was called in collaboration with the All Tagin Students’ Union (ATSU) and several other organisations and forums. He appealed to the public to extend their cooperation during the bandh period.
Chokar alleged that despite repeated appeals, petitions, and protest rallies, the administration has so far failed to take any genuine initiative to address the concerns raised by project-affected families and villagers.
The project, to be implemented by NHPC, is proposed at Menga, about 20 km from Daporijo, the district headquarters of Upper Subansiri.
A last-minute effort by the district administration to persuade the students’ union to withdraw the bandh call reportedly failed, as the AUSDSU rejected the administration’s offer for talks.
Meanwhile, the Upper Subansiri district administration and NHPC have postponed the public hearing scheduled for today at the proposed project site due to the bandh.
