Guwahati, June 12: Chief Ministers of all eight northeastern states on Friday pitched region-specific development priorities, infrastructure expansion, tourism promotion and greater policy flexibility during a high-level interaction convened by NITI Aayog.
The meeting, chaired by NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Ashok Lahiri, brought together the chief ministers of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura, along with chief secretaries and senior officials, to discuss development challenges, innovations and growth strategies for the region.
Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, Pema Khandu, said the Northeast was emerging as a major growth engine and highlighted the state’s hydropower potential. He also showcased governance initiatives such as Sarkar Aapke Dwar, Seva Aapke Dwar and Cabinet Aapke Dwar aimed at improving service delivery and grievance redressal.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stressed the need for balanced development to prevent regional disparities. He cited the recently signed tripartite agreement among the Centre, Assam and Nagaland for oil and gas exploration in disputed boundary areas as a model of cooperative development. Sarma also said Assam had emerged as the country’s fastest-growing state and called for greater attention to regional development needs.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said economic growth must lead to tangible improvements in human development. Presenting the state’s Transformation Journey 2032 vision, he highlighted the role of externally aided projects in accelerating development and called for stronger collaboration among northeastern states in trade, exports and environmental sustainability.
Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma underscored the state’s growing tourism sector and sought support for the Mizoram Ginger Mission. He also advocated greater flexibility in centrally sponsored schemes to address challenges unique to northeastern states.
Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio pushed for the continuation of support under the 15th Finance Commission and highlighted opportunities in infrastructure, agriculture, oil and gas exploration, and exports, including Nagaland coffee.
Manipur Chief Minister Y. Khemchand Singh focused on rehabilitation and resettlement efforts in the conflict-affected state, stressing the need for effective monitoring of reconstruction and housing projects.
Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang called for improved air connectivity, stronger digital infrastructure and continuation of the North East Industrial Development Scheme (NEIDS) to boost investments and employment.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha highlighted the state’s border-related challenges and sought greater support for connectivity, trade infrastructure, skill development and export-oriented sectors such as bamboo, rubber, textiles, pharmaceuticals and tourism.
The discussions covered a wide range of sectors, including agriculture, healthcare, education, livelihoods, tourism, skill development and infrastructure, with states sharing successful initiatives and policy innovations.
Concluding the meeting, NITI Aayog Member Joram Aniya said the institution would continue working with central ministries and departments to address issues raised by the northeastern states and support the region’s development priorities.
