Shillong, July 31: Starting August 1, 2025, India’s digital payment ecosystem will undergo a major revamp as the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) introduces new regulations for the Unified Payments Interface (UPI). The changes aim to enhance system efficiency, curb misuse, and strengthen user trust in the country’s most widely used payment platform.
Key Highlights of the New UPI Rules:
Usage Caps Introduced: Users can now make up to 50 balance inquiries and 25 linked account views per day on each UPI app to ease server load and improve speed.
Auto-Debits Get a Time Slot: Recurring payments such as EMIs and subscriptions will only be processed outside peak hours (10:00 AM–1:00 PM and 5:00 PM–9:30 PM). Failed attempts will be retried up to three times.
Smarter Transaction Status Checks: Pending transaction status can only be checked after a short delay and with limited retries to reduce traffic.
More Transparency Before Payment: Apps must display the recipient’s bank name before confirming a payment, adding an extra security layer.
Credit Lines via UPI: From August 31, users can make UPI payments and ATM withdrawals using pre-approved credit lines, extending UPI beyond traditional bank accounts.
Inactive UPI IDs to Be Retired: IDs unused for 12 months or more will be deactivated to reduce risks from dormant accounts.
Transaction Limits & Fees: The ₹1 lakh daily limit stays unchanged, with higher thresholds for healthcare and education. Peer-to-peer bank transfers remain free, while interchange fees may apply to PPI-based transactions above ₹2,000.
With over 10 billion monthly transactions, NPCI’s updated framework is designed to ensure UPI remains secure, agile, and user-friendly, strengthening its role as the backbone of India’s digital payments.
