Imphal, July 15: The National People’s Women’s Front (NPWF), the women’s wing of the National People’s Party (NPP) in Manipur, has urged the state government to launch a time-bound investigation into the burning of six abandoned houses belonging to displaced Meitei families at Kanto Sabal near Leimakhong in Imphal West.
In a representation submitted to Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam, NPWF president Nombala Sapam said a party delegation visited the affected site and later met the displaced families at the Khurkhul Mandop Relief Camp to assess the situation.
The organisation said the incident had caused “immense emotional trauma” to the affected families and further eroded their confidence in returning to their native village.
The NPWF urged the government to identify and prosecute those responsible, strengthen security in and around Kanto Sabal, and deploy adequate security personnel to protect vulnerable areas and abandoned properties belonging to displaced families.
It also sought appropriate compensation and assistance for those who lost their homes and property, while calling for measures to create a secure environment that would enable displaced families to return home with dignity and confidence.
The women’s wing said the government should take immediate steps to safeguard abandoned houses until displaced residents can safely return, adding that the incident has heightened fear and uncertainty among families already displaced by the ethnic conflict.
The representation comes in the wake of the recent torching of six abandoned Meitei houses at Kanto Sabal, an incident that has sparked political reactions and renewed concerns over the security of displaced communities in Manipur.
