Over 200 Women mark International Women’s Day at Rongram Horti Hub

TURA, March 20: International Women’s Day was observed at the Rongram Horti Hub Training Hall in West Garo Hills on Friday with over 200 women participating under the theme “Rights. Justice. Action. For All Women and Girls.”

The programme was organised by the District Social Welfare Officer, West Garo Hills, in collaboration with the District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW), Tura. Participants included officials from various departments, Lady Supervisors, Anganwadi workers, and members of Self Help Groups (SHGs) from across the district.

Chairing the event, Gender Specialist, DHEW, Cherandha A. Sangma, welcomed the gathering. In her keynote address, District Social Welfare Officer Madonna Onasis T. Sangma said the platform helped connect rural and urban communities while showcasing SHG products, contributing to local economic growth. She also urged women to actively avail government schemes to strengthen their socio-economic standing.

Stalls featuring local spices, pickles, and agri-horticultural produce were set up, drawing attention from attendees.

Jakre M. Sangma, WPSI, representing the Superintendent of Police’s office, spoke on workplace safety and raised awareness on sexual harassment, while highlighting services offered by the One Stop Centre, Tura.

Women entrepreneurs shared their success stories, encouraging self-reliance and entrepreneurship among participants.

Chief Guest Hemaritha Ch. Sangma, Vice Chairperson of the Meghalaya State Commission for Women and retired Additional Director of Social Welfare, underscored the role of women in society and expressed optimism over their growing empowerment.

The programme also featured a musical performance by Tura Music Academy.

Several women entrepreneurs were felicitated, including Shano Chelsy M. Sangma; Harkhya Nastasia B. Marak (Laisve Dance Studio); Sengmitchi C. Marak (Amis Accessories); Gremila Ch. Marak (food products); Kellisha R. Marak (K Whimsical Wraps); and Dr. Cynthia R. Marak (Rikmaritchu).
