Guwahati, June 12: A college student lost her life in a tragic accident after a large tree fell on the scooter she was travelling on while on her way to appear for an examination in Guwahati on Thursday.
The incident occurred in the Bhootnath-Kalipur area of the city. The deceased has been identified as Parismita Hazarika, a student of Pandu College.
According to reports, Parismita was heading to her examination centre along with fellow student Jyotirmoy Mohan on a scooter when a massive tree suddenly collapsed onto the vehicle.
While Jyotirmoy, who was riding the scooter, was rescued immediately, Parismita, who was travelling as a pillion rider, became trapped beneath the fallen tree.
Eyewitnesses said the young student remained pinned under the tree for a considerable period before rescue teams could reach the spot. Personnel from the Railways and the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) later launched a joint operation to remove the tree and rescue her.
She was rushed to a hospital in critical condition. However, despite efforts by doctors to save her, she succumbed to her injuries.
The incident has sparked concern over public safety during the monsoon season, when strong winds and heavy rainfall often weaken trees across the city.
The tragic death of the young student, who was on her way to write an examination, has left family members, friends and fellow students in shock.
Authorities are yet to ascertain the circumstances that led to the tree collapsing. Further details are awaited.
