Shillong, 30 June: The Committee on Petitions of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly on Monday held an awareness programme in Nongpoh, Ri Bhoi District, with the aim of educating stakeholders on the role of the Committee in addressing public grievances and bridging the gap between citizens and lawmakers.

Organised in collaboration with the Office of the Deputy Commissioner, Ri Bhoi, the programme saw the participation of Block Development Officers (BDOs), members of Self Help Groups (SHGs), and representatives of Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) from across the district.
The event was chaired by Mawlai MLA Brightstarwell Marbaniang, who is currently serving as Acting Chairman of the Committee in the absence of Bajengdoba MLA Pongseng Marak. Committee members present included Rambrai-Jyrngam MLA Remington Gabil Momin, Mawhati MLA Charles Marngar, and Rajabala MLA Dr. Mizanur Rahman Kazi. Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem and Ri Bhoi Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal were also in attendance.
In his address, Marbaniang highlighted the importance of the Petitions Committee in ensuring that the voices of citizens are heard in the Legislative Assembly.
“The Petition Committee serves as a platform for citizens to raise issues and grievances before the Assembly. Many are aware of the three pillars of governance—Legislature, Executive, and Judiciary—but few know how the Legislature, through such committees, promotes accountability and engagement,” he said.
MLA Charles Marngar urged community-based organisations to make use of the petitioning process to raise local concerns, while MLA Remington Gabil Momin called for greater participation from citizens.
“We invite SHGs, NGOs, and educated individuals to bring forward the problems faced by the community. This Committee exists to represent those voices in the Assembly,” Momin said.
Kazi, speaking on the relevance of the Committee, described it as one of the oldest and most essential legislative mechanisms that connect people with their elected representatives.
Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem welcomed the initiative and thanked the Committee for choosing Nongpoh as the venue. He encouraged the people of Ri Bhoi to take advantage of the opportunity to interact directly with the Assembly Committee.
Many participants expressed gratitude for the platform and shared their concerns with the Committee members. Representatives from SHGs said they appreciated the chance to voice their challenges and seek possible resolutions through official legislative channels.
