Tura, Aug 30: The Post Graduate Students’ Union (PGSU) of North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Tura campus, has issued an urgent appeal to the Meghalaya government to expedite the establishment of the long-pending Horticulture College at Williamnagar in East Garo Hills.
Despite progress in land acquisition and academic preparation, the project continues to face delays. Local Nokmas and the Dawagre A’king clan had donated 25.50 hectares of land for the college in January 2009, following a proposal initiated in December 2008. The land was formally handed over to the government in the presence of the Deputy Commissioner of East Garo Hills, and infrastructure groundwork was completed by MeECL between 2009 and 2010.

In a renewed effort to push the project forward, a high-level meeting was held on October 15, 2019, under the guidance of Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma. Subsequently, NEHU’s Academic Council, in its 103rd meeting on November 25, 2019, formally approved the syllabus for the B.Sc. (Hons) in Horticulture, signalling the university’s readiness to launch the programme.
“The academic groundwork has been completed. The land has been ready for over 15 years. What is now missing is the political and administrative will to bring this vision to life. The continued delay is causing deep frustration and unrest among students and local communities who were promised this institution,” a PGSU representative said.
PGSU stressed that the Horticulture College is vital for Meghalaya, an agrarian state, as it would provide affordable specialised education, promote scientific agricultural practices, and foster innovation.
The Union’s appeal serves as a reminder to the government of its commitment to the people and a call for swift action to operationalise this institution for the future of Meghalaya’s youth and agriculture sector.
