Guwahati, Sept 11: Mizoram is set to get its first Rajdhani Express this weekend, marking a historic addition to the state’s connectivity with the national capital. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off the train on Saturday, September 13, linking Sairang station near Aizawl with Delhi’s Anand Vihar station.
Alongside the Rajdhani, PM Modi will also inaugurate a daily express train between Sairang and Guwahati and a tri-weekly train between Sairang and Kolkata.
These launches coincide with the inauguration of the Bairabi–Sairang railway line, a project first conceptualised in 1999. The 51-km stretch faced engineering hurdles including tough terrain, short working seasons, and frequent landslides, but its completion finally places Aizawl on India’s railway map.
With these services, Mizoram will not only get direct access to Delhi but also improved rail links to Guwahati and Kolkata—seen as a major boost for trade, travel, and regional integration in the Northeast.
According to the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), the new service will cover a distance of 2,510 km in 43 hours and 25 minutes, with an average speed of 57.81 kmph. Regular weekly services will begin from September 19.
On the inauguration day, the 20-coach train will depart from Sairang at 10 am and reach Anand Vihar at 7:30 am on Monday. From September 19 onwards, the train (No. 20597) will leave Sairang every Friday at 4:30 pm, arriving in Delhi at 10:50 am on Sunday.
For the return journey, the Rajdhani (No. 20598) will depart Anand Vihar on Sunday at 7:50 pm and reach Sairang at 3:15 pm on Tuesday.
The Rajdhani Express will halt at 21 stations, including Guwahati, New Cooch Behar, New Jalpaiguri, Malda Town, Bhagalpur, Patna, Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction and Kanpur.
As the Bairabi–Sairang section is not yet electrified, a diesel locomotive will haul the train up to Guwahati, where an electric engine will take over for the rest of the journey to Delhi.
