Police destroys ‘ganja’ cultivation in Sohiong

Must read

Shillong, Oct 21: A joint team comprising the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF), the Special Operation Team (SOT), along with officials from the Excise and Forest Departments, on Tuesday conducted a major operation to destroy ganja (cannabis) plantations in Laitlulong village under Hima Sohiong.

The destruction drive was carried out under the supervision of the Block Development Officer (BDO) of Sohiong C&RD Block, who also serves as the Magistrate.

A total of over 120 personnel, including police from Shillong and Sohiong, participated in the operation. The team entered every household found cultivating ganja whether in courtyards, backyards, or fields and ensured that not a single plant was left standing.

Authorities expressed deep concern over the extensive scale of ganja cultivation in the area and surprise that residents had chosen to grow cannabis instead of vegetables or other crops.

It may be noted that the region has long been known for illegal ganja cultivation, with supplies often making their way to Shillong and other parts of the state.

As of the filing of this report, the operation to cut and destroy the ganja plants was still ongoing.
