Guwahati, Feb 18: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said that by 2031, the BJP’s principal political contest in the state may not be against the Congress but against Raijor Dal.
Speaking to reporters, Sarma claimed that many “hardworking Muslim leaders” from the Congress are likely to shift to the Raijor Dal in the coming years.
“By next year, all hardworking Muslim leaders from the Congress will join the Raijor Dal. The primary political concern for the next election is not the Congress but the Raijor Dal, as grassroots workers may move from the Congress to the regional outfit,” Sarma said.
Referring to Raijor Dal chief Akhil Gogoi, Sarma said the state’s political dynamics would depend on Gogoi’s strategy.
“If Akhil Gogoi aligns with the Congress, it is a different matter. But if he maintains his party as an independent force, the BJP will have to fight against Raijor Dal,” he said.
Sarma further observed that if Gogoi remains consistent and projects himself as a serious and mature leader, he could consolidate Muslim votes and emerge as a significant political figure, drawing a comparison with Asaduddin Owaisi of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM).
