Nongpoh, May 9: A rare insect that emerges only once every four years has once again returned to Meghalaya’s Ri-Bhoi district, as the Ñiangtaser Festival 2026 began on Friday at Iewsir Saiden village, drawing crowds of villagers, students, tourists and nature enthusiasts from across the state.
Organised by the Ri Bhoi Tourism, Environment & Development Forum, the festival celebrates the reappearance of the elusive “Ñiangtaser” insect, scientifically identified as Chremistica ribhoi, a rare cicada species endemic to parts of Ri-Bhoi.
Locally nicknamed the “Ñiang World Cup,” the insect’s emergence intriguingly coincides with the FIFA World Cup cycle every four years, turning the phenomenon into a unique blend of ecology, folklore and community celebration in Meghalaya.
The festival was inaugurated in the presence of Cabinet Minister Sosthenes Sohtun as Chief Guest and Celestine Lyngdoh as Guest of Honour, alongside community leaders and researchers.
One of the major attractions of the festival is the night expedition into forested areas, where participants armed with torches observe the insects in their natural habitat. Football matches, cultural performances, music events and camping activities are also part of the celebrations.
Addressing the gathering, Sohtun said the festival highlights Ri-Bhoi’s biodiversity and growing eco-tourism potential while encouraging environmental conservation. He described the four-year emergence cycle of the insect as one of Meghalaya’s most remarkable natural phenomena.
Scientists and researchers attending the festival also underlined the ecological significance of the species. Dr. Rodeson Thangkhiew of USTM and retired NEHU professor Prof. HJ Syiemlieh shared insights into the cicada’s unusual behavioural traits and the importance of preserving its fragile habitat.
The rare reappearance of Chremistica ribhoi has increasingly attracted scientific curiosity and public interest over the years, positioning the Ñiangtaser Festival as one of Northeast India’s most unusual biodiversity-linked cultural events.
