Regional Committee to visit Lapangap, Govt vows to resolve border dispute

Shillong, Oct 9: The Regional Committee for West Jaintia Hills district has been tasked with visiting Lapangap village following a deadly clash between Karbi and Pnar villagers that resulted in one fatality.

After a meeting held on Thursday, Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Home Prestone Tynsong informed that he had suggested to the deputy chief minister and chairman of the regional committee for West Jaintia Hills Sniawbhalang Dhar to conduct a joint visit to Lapangap village and appeal to the people from both sides to maintain status quo pending the solution to the long pending border dispute between the two states.

“We had a meeting with the chairman of the regional committee (Dhar) from this side and I suggested to him that better you contact your counterpart and if need be just go to the ground, though the joint inspection (for resolving the border dispute) is yet to take place, just go there and make people understand that at least maintaining the status quo is important because right now this core issue happened just because of the boundary issue. It happened because this particular place is the area of differences,” he told reporters

Asked, the deputy chief minister informed that the joint inspection supposed to be carried out by the regional committees from both Assam and Meghalaya has been delayed due to Assam’s pre-election preparations.

The state government had requested Assam’s cooperation, but unfortunately, they haven’t been able to accommodate our schedule.

“So, these are the issues where ultimately, we can’t reach the convenient time then till today we are not able to conduct the joint inspection as mandated by the notification,” he added.

Tynsong assured that the government is committed to resolve the six remaining areas of differences.

“We’ve made this issue a priority as we are really concerned about it and our Chief Minister has already discussed it with the Assam CM. We’re awaiting the outcome of their discussions,” he said while referring to the second phase of border talks held in June.
