Guwahati, May 17: The visit of RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat to Assam is being viewed as politically and organisationally significant, with the Sangh leadership reviewing its strategy for the Northeast at a time of shifting social and electoral dynamics in the region.
Bhagwat arrived at the RSS headquarters, Sudarshanalaya, in Guwahati amid tight security after attending a two-day RSS training camp in Hojai, where key organisational deliberations were held behind closed doors.
Sources said the visit assumes importance as the RSS seeks to further consolidate its presence in the Northeast, a region that has increasingly emerged as a strategic focus for the Sangh Parivar over the past decade. Discussions reportedly centred on strengthening grassroots outreach, expanding organisational activities and assessing the evolving political and social situation across Assam and neighbouring states.

The RSS chief is also believed to have reviewed the Sangh’s long-term roadmap for the region, including efforts to deepen engagement with indigenous communities, youth and educational institutions.
Political observers note that Bhagwat’s Assam tour comes at a crucial time, with the BJP-led alliance continuing to expand its influence in the Northeast while simultaneously facing challenges linked to identity politics, ethnic tensions and demographic concerns.
The expected courtesy meeting between Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Bhagwat has further added to the political significance of the visit. Sarma, regarded as one of the BJP’s key strategists in the Northeast, has played a major role in the party’s electoral expansion in the region.

Bhagwat is scheduled to leave for Nagpur later in the evening after concluding his Assam visit.
