SCA slams MCA elections as ‘fundamentally defective’, seeks fresh start

Must read

SHILLONG, DEC 4: The Shillong Cricket Association (SCA) has strongly objected to the Meghalaya Cricket Association (MCA) General Elections 2025 and demanded the Electoral Officer to declare the current process null and void citing several irregularities and violations of the BCCI’s election framework and the MCA Constitution.

In a statement issued on Thursday, SCA termed the election process “fundamentally defective” and “constitutionally indefensible”, highlighting issues such as suppression of voters’ identities, illusory objection window, and truncated campaign period.

The association has urged the Electoral Officer to declare the current process null and void and restart the election.

“The ongoing MCA election process is not a case of minor technical lapses but a concerted attempt to skew outcomes, undermine free and fair elections, and erode confidence in cricket governance in Meghalaya,” SCA stated.

The SCA has also pointed out that the MCA released only a list of member associations without disclosing the identities of their representatives, forcing candidates to file nominations without knowing their voter base. The names of representatives were uploaded on the MCA website only after closure of nominations .

The Deputy Commissioner has taken note of the potential multiple violations in the MCA election schedule and ordered an inquiry into the conduct of the Meghalaya Cricket Association General Elections 2025.

“This official step, triggered by the pattern of departures from the BCCI framework and the MCA Constitution already highlighted by SCA, reinforces the seriousness of the concerns raised about transparency, legality and fairness in the ongoing electoral process,” the SCA stated.

The SCA has demanded that the Electoral Officer restart the election with proper nomination of representatives, publication of a draft roll with names, a genuine objection period, and clearly notify that polling and declaration of results will take place at MCA headquarters in Shillong.

“On the basis of these cumulative violations, SCA asserts that the ongoing MCA election process is not a case of minor technical lapses but a concerted attempt to skew outcomes, undermine free and fair elections, and erode confidence in cricket governance in Meghalaya. The Association has publicly called upon the Electoral Officer to (i) declare the current process null and void, (ii) restart the election with proper nomination of representatives, publication of a draft roll with names, a genuine objection period, and only thereafter a fresh nomination window, (iii) clearly notify that polling and declaration of results will take place at MCA headquarters in Shillong, and, if unable to ensure such a process, to consider stepping down to allow a more neutral and independent officer to conduct an unbiased election in line with the BCCI framework.”
